<p>But why the key error is occurring remains a mystery...</p>

I'm trying to build up towards the problem but haven't recreated it yet. Maybe I'll find more time tomorrow to try.</p>

The environment variable is there to begin with but I modify (iow, break for now) <code>os.environ</code>.
