Maximum allowed artifact storage size of 50000 Mb will be exceeded

Is happening on all our CI runs, e.g.

Looking in the settings, there is no way to remove old artifacts, or preferably automatically.

Searching online for this problem shows endless amounts of similar posts where someone from AppVeyor manually increases the limit for that project. What kind of crazyness is that? Why even have a limit, or why have no automatic culling of old ones? Is there some kind of smart businness plan behind all of this I'm not understanding?

I'm sorry you hit that limitation!

That is kind of abuse-prevention mechanism which is enabled for free open-source accounts only. We've seen accounts uploading tens and hundreds of gigabytes of artifacts per build. Artifacts older than 6 months are automatically removed, but if a free account's storage reaches 50 GB in a 6-month window it gets a warning and then suspended. You can also delete old builds from a project history to free the storage.

Being a small self-funded company we cannot provide true "unlimited" artifact storage like Google, Microsoft, or other big players. Business plan here is being on a thin balance between "free" and "unlimited" to stay profitable.

We've increased artifact storage for your account, so you should be unblocked now. In the meantime, we are working on improvements to make the whole story less annoying (reducing retention period for free accounts to 1 month and introducing "transient" artifacts are a few options).

Thank you for your understanding and support.

    Ok, understood.

I don't see where I can delete old builds, though.

It's on project history page when you hover a row - see attached screenshot.

How do I delete many/all at once?

It can be done via API only. You can see API requests (1 - list project history and 2 - delete build) on Network tab of your browser.
