VS 2017 image was building fine, then fails ever since 2 days ago

If you look at the history here, you'll see I had several successful builds of the fixMultitargetingBuild branch then suddenly the builds failed. I even clicked 'Rebuild Commit' on the last successful build and that fails too. Did something change in the "VS 2017" build agent image?

The particular failure looks like it's likely a bug in the VS 2017 build, but I'm just wondering what update to the build agent caused it to manifest so I can better report it.

I'm seeing the same thing, since about 5 days ago, though it isn't every build, it's an intermittent issue.

Examples are all the job failures in these builds:

    https://ci.appveyor.com/project/jagerman/pybind11/build/1.0.543
    https://ci.appveyor.com/project/jagerman/pybind11/build/1.0.553
    https://ci.appveyor.com/project/wjakob/pybind11/build/1.0.1657
    https://ci.appveyor.com/project/wjakob/pybind11/build/1.0.1662

Always with "Command exited with code -1" and no other error message. The failure is in different places all the time: sometime during compilation, sometimes during linking, and once even after all compilation was finished (the last one).

Repeating the build job will often succeed; I see the failure, I would guess, around 1 in 8 jobs, and (so far) only ever on the VS2017 builds.

The very first such failure in the build history is this one:
    https://ci.appveyor.com/project/wjakob/pybind11/build/1.0.1623
in case it helps match up the failures to a potential build image change.

(It's quite possibly a separate issue, of course, but seemed superficially similar).

There is currently VS 2017 version 15.1 on build workers. Updates history can be found here: https://www.appveyor.com/updates/

I have a feeling that "Command exited with code -1" error might be something related to VS updates as 15.1 is not the latest version, but 15.1.1 was recently released: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/news/releasenotes/vs2017-relnotes

We are going to roll out image update with 15.1.1 in the coming days - will see if that fixes the issue.

Regarding the error reported by @andrewarnott in the original message - I'm not sure, hard to tell right away what's wrong without knowing project specifics - might be VS update as well.

This is a regression in 15.1 due to a change in NuGet. See https://github.com/NuGet/Home/issues/5021 for a discussion.

No fix in 15.1.1. But hopefully we'll get a fix soon.

Thanks for the update! I've subscribed to that issue.
