So if you set password to something like
123
this error is explainable. Here is copy paste from configuration settings:

Not contain the user's account name or parts of the user's full name that exceed two consecutive characters
Be at least six characters in length
Contain characters from three of the following four categories:
English uppercase characters (A through Z)
English lowercase characters (a through z)
Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

(this is an example).

I guess it's missing a non-alphabetic character?

Julien Amsellemtag:help.appveyor.com,2012-11-13:Comment/425629202017-05-15T21:45:18Z2017-05-15T21:45:18ZRDP password issue

You can simple remove APPVEYOR_RDP_PASSWORD part and AppVeyor will generate and print something for you. Or yes, add something like ! and some digit to your password

Ilya Finkelshteyntag:help.appveyor.com,2012-11-13:Comment/425629202017-05-16T20:45:29Z2017-05-16T20:45:34ZRDP password issue

Thanks, working like a charm, the issue is probably that I had setup both environement variable in the UI and in the config file. It seems that the password was taken from the UI where the value didn't fulfill the requirements.

Julien Amsellemtag:help.appveyor.com,2012-11-13:Comment/425629202017-05-17T03:17:58Z2017-05-17T03:17:58ZRDP password issue

I see, right, while in general YAML takes over UI, this is not true in case of variables. We need to document this better.

Ilya Finkelshteyn
