Is it possible to do this?

environment:
  solutionFile: Foo.sln
cache: packages
before_build:
- nuget restore %solutionFile%
build:
  project: %solutionFile%

see how the project value is the variable %solutionFile% ? Can this be done, yet?

Yes we can! - found it!

    ref: https://github.com/appveyor/ci/issues/131

    and http://www.appveyor.com/updates/2015/03/06

eg. (notice the 2 different ways we use variables, based on which part of the build process is using them...)

    environment:
      solutionFile: Foo.sln

    before_build:
    - nuget restore %solutionFile%

    build:
      project: $(solutionFile)
