Is there a way to pass parameters to a build other than via editing the project settings or the yml file? Like custom runs in TC?

Well, there is the AppVeyor rest api call to start a build to which you can pass environment variables but it seems that you're looking for something in the UI.
Can you explain a little more about how "custom runs" work in TC and how that would differ from simply pushing changes to a yml file (which, depending on your webhook configuration, could be viewed as a kind of parameterization)?
