Refer to active test category in custom test_script
Test categories are pretty handle to split up a large test suite, but how can I use it with a custom test script? It would be pretty nice if they are available in an environment variable or something.

AppVeyor does not have a knowledge about test categories you introduced in your test code. You can add those environment variables yourself and set them to respective values.
But I am not sure I am actually answering your question. Can you please elaborate your scenario and problem with more details?
